This iconic "Hope" poster of Barack Obama was created by Shepard Fairey for his 2008 presidential campaign. Inspired by a photograph taken by Associated Press photographer Mannie Garcia, the image became a widely recognized symbol. At the same time, Garcia got into a huge copyright infringement lawsuit over Fairey’s use of the photograph. Despite the legal controversary, Shepard Fairey’s stylized stencil portrait of Obama with a patriotic color scheme and the word "PROGRESS" at the bottom, makes this artwork an enduring emblem of hope and political change.
